Endemic to California

The California bay laurel (Umbellularia californica) is a tree species endemic to California, meaning it is native to and found exclusively in this region. The California bay laurel is an integral part of the local ecosystem, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species. Protecting endemic plants like the California bay laurel helps preserve the natural heritage and ecological balance of California.

Cacao Free

Our product does not contain any cacao products, so we cannot call our product chocolate. Rather, Laurelate uses seed of the California Bay Laurel.

The colonial history of chocolate explains the unsustainable, unethical supply chain of cacao. Although Chocolate is native to Central and South America, today, 70% of the world’s cacao is grown in Africa where an estimated 2 million children are exploited for hazardous labor, including child trafficking and slavery (Documentary. The Dark Side of Chocolate).  When chocolate is farmed in non native environments it is responsible for deforestation of tropical rainforests. Cacao is responsible for 70% of illegal cutting down rainforests in Ivory Coast (WWF)
